Islamists plundered and destroyed a minority Hindu village in Shalla, Bangladesh

Hefajot-e-Islam leader Mamunul's followers attacked the village of Jhumon Das, who was arrested in Shalla, Sunamganj, for making indecent remarks about Hefazat leader Mamunul Haque on social media Facebook.





The incident took place at Noagram of the upazila around 9am on Wednesday. At that time they vandalized at least 87 houses in the village. The furniture and belongings of those families were looted and destroyed.

Witnesses said that Mamunul Haque's followers attacked the village with a procession with sticks. Before the attack, the residents of Noagram left their homes and took shelter in Haor. No casualties were reported due to that. Police have been deployed in the area to control the situation.

At least 87 houses were attacked in Shalla including Shailendra Das, Anil Das, Digen Das, Haripada Das, Rabindra Das, Rontu Das, Asim Chakraborty, Devendra Kumar Das, Nagendra Kumar Das and Manki Das.




The victim Shailendra Das said that the boy who wrote on Facebook was handed over to the police yesterday. They were assured that nothing more would happen. But in the morning, hundreds of people attacked with sticks in front of the police and the upazila chairman. The men and women of the village started running towards the haor with their children. When he returned home, he found that the furniture had been vandalized and looted. He alleged that the attackers also looted gold and money from his house.





Shalla Police Station office in charge  Nazmul Islam told the newspaper that the boy who had insulted Allama Mamunul Haque on Facebook was caught and handed over to the police by the villagers last night. Legal action has been taken against him. But in the morning, when the police got the news that more than a hundred people were marching towards Noagram with sticks, the police also chased them. But some people had already crossed the river and attacked Noagram. At that time, about 87 houses including the house of Jhuman Das were vandalized.


Additional police have been deployed in the village to bring the situation under control. The situation is calm now, the OC said.


Earlier on Monday, Allama Mamunul Haque, joint secretary general of Hefazat, addressed a rally of Hefazat in Dirai upazila adjacent to Shalla.
