Attack on Hindu house after Eid prayers in Osmaninagar, Bangladesh

A Hindu house near Burungabazar in Osmani Nagar, Sylhet has been attacked and vandalized for allegedly running an anti-Islamic campaign on Facebook. The incident took place on Wednesday (June 5) at around 9 am on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Talking to the locals, it is learned that after the death of a member of the Hindu community in the last 10/12 days, there was tension among the locals over burying a Hindu dead body in the local crematorium during the month of Ramadan. Muslims were saying that creating a Hindu dead body during Holly Ramadan will damage the holiness of Ramadan. Later the matter ended locally. Following the incident, anti-Islamic propaganda was launched by opening a fake Facebook ID in the name of Divakar S Dev (29), a family member of the victim. This caused local tension. Multiple meetings were held in different villages on the issue. When the matter came to light, Divakar filed a general diary (GD) with the Osmani Nagar police station last Friday. Divakar's elder brother Shimul Dev Shibu, a member of Ward No. 2 of Burunga UP and general of Burungabazar Businessmen's Association, told the locals about the fake ID of Debakar and making a general diary at the police station. The attack on the house took place on Wednesday morning as a result of excitement from the fake ID on Facebook.

UP member Shimul Dev Shibu told Sylhettoday24.com that more than two hundred people came to my house from Kharerpur village of the upazila through Jamtala Bazar after Eid prayers on Wednesday morning to chant the slogan Naraye Takbir, Allah Akbar. At that time they attacked my house with a piece of brick brought with them. The tin house and furniture of the house were severely damaged. No casualties were reported as the KC gate of the house was locked at the time of the incident.

Osmani Nagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer, SP Circle of Police, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Osmani Nagar Police Station, local Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Parishad, Puja Udjapan Parishad leaders visited the spot.

Osmani Nagar Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Al Mamun confirmed the incident.

He said a general diary was kept at the police station a few days ago due to opening a fake Facebook ID. The matter has been sent to CID by the police through the court.

The OC said those involved in Wednesday's attack would be brought under the law.
