Some unidentified miscreants have reportedly burnt the Ashor Ghor(music room) of Baul Ranesh Thakur to ashes in Sunamganj.

He is one of the notable disciples of Baul Samrat Shah Abdul Karim.

The incident took place in Ujaldhal village of Derai upazila in the district at around 2am on Monday, said Derai police station officer in charge KM Nazrul Islam.

Many musical instruments including drums, harmonium and monochord kept in the room for performing musical programs were also burnt to ashes along with the room.

Baul Ranesh Thakur said on Sunday,  after having dinner he along with family members had gone to bed for sleep. However, around 2am on Monday, he along with his family members woke up hearing people shouting and saw the music room was burning.

Many devotees around the country would gather at the music room for learning music. Now, the room is ravaged by fire which would stop the learning of  baul songs, said Jui Thakur, daughter of Ranesh Thakur.

“I woke up after hearing screams, and saw the room was  burning and Ranesh Thakur was crying,” said Baul Shah Abdul Karim's son Shah Nur Jalal, who lives adjacent to the house of Ranesh.

"We doused the fire, but many important books of Baul songs and musical instruments were already burnt to ashes." said Shah Nur Jalal.

Meanwhile, Derai Upazila Nirbahi Officer visited the scene at around 11am on Tuesday and helped Ranesh Thakur  with cash.

"I have spoken with Baul Ranesh Thakur and his family members and gave TK20,000 to him," UNO Md Shafiullah.

"Police are investigating the incident with utmost importance and have already visited the scene two times. We will bring the perpetrators of this shameful act under legal actions soon," said KM Nazrul Islam, officer in charge of Derai police station.
